Lomu and his brother chewy were rescued by some local safari hunters when they preformed a cessarian section on a dead female hyena

Lomu was born by some miracle. His mother had been shot and was dead yet he was alive and well in his mothers uterus. After been born he was reared on milk from a makeshift teat using a surgical glove.

Lomu is now been hand reared by Nicky and has turned out to be a lovely little fellow. He plays with his blanket and pretends to kill it, by shaking his head from side to side.

Lomu the orphaned spotted hyena

Recently a couple of hunters managed to rescue two baby hyenas from the uterus of their dead mother. This is quite an unbelievable story Read the whole story here.

A couple of hunters were hunting in a local hunting concession in Zimbabwe. Whilst hunting their quota for the day, they managed to shoot a hyena, on coming up to inspect their dead trophy they noticed that the stomach was moving and they promptly cut open the mother, and suprisingly out popped two lovely baby hyenas. Over the next two days the babies where reared using a rubber surgical glove as a make shift teat until the hunters could get back to civalisation. It was then that the two babies were brought into Chipangali to be handreared. This is where Nicky Wilson shows a special intest and flare in rearing baby animals. The two pups where named Lomu meaning mouth in the local Ndebele language and Chewy. Unfortunately little Chewy has died from a bacterial infection quite possibly associated with the way in which they where brought into the world. Currently Lomu is been fed every 4 hours and drinks 260 ml of milk she/he is a lovely little animal with an unbelievable amount of character. It is very difficult to tell if a spotted hyena is male or female until they are at least 6 months old as both males and females have external male appearances down below.
