Nyoni

Wild Dog
3 years Years old

I\

Nyoni is a young male baboon and, like the larger percentage of the baboons we have here - he was confiscated from illegal animal traders by the S.P.C.A. He was found leashed with a tight belt made of red & black electrical cable, which unlike other forms of belting tends to tighten the more the baboon tries to free itself.

When he arrived he was treated for the bad effects arising from this most disturbing practice - intestinal blockage and wounds round his waist. He was then vaccinated against rabies and various other diseases, and given as much food as he could eat. Once Nyoni had gained wieght, he was placed with other baboons.

This young male you have adopted has recently been moved from his enclosure, for being a bully. Nyoni rated himself alpha male in his enclosure and was always fighting to eat first, and chasing and biting his room mates’ tails, when he felt threatened by them. He also had the habit of attacking the worker who cleans his enclosure. He had the pleasure of grabbing Philip's leg the one morning, while the enclosure was being cleaned. Well he had no intention of letting go, so Philip stood there helpless, for if he did move Nyoni would sink his sharp canines into him. Well, eventually Philip was rescued by the senior cleaner, and has not been into Nyoni’s enclosure since.

Because of his reputation of picking on his room mates and attacking people, we removed him and placed him into enclosure further along, with two other youngsters, Hickman and Hairy. Of the two, Hairy was the alpha male in this instance, so by putting Nyoni in with these two he was now at the bottom of the list. He has tried to take over as the ranking male, but to his disgust he has been put into his place at the bottom and now gives way to Hairy and Hickman. He eats last and gets chased and bitten when he steps out of line.

Nyoni does not attack or mock charge anyone now and has settled in and now knows his place. I have recently been in with him and his new pals and he has changed a lot - for the better.

He thanks you for adopting him, ensuring tasty treats and for letting us keep him in his temporary home a lot longer.
