Lucy the common grey duiker
Four weeks ago our Security team was on a routine anti-poaching/ game fence check when they came upon Lucy, a young common grey duiker
She was waiting, patiently, for her mum to come and fetch her from her hiding place under a small bush. Unfortunately even in our small game park, here at Chipangali, we have poaching, and her mum wasn't going to be coming to fetch her. She had been orphaned. After a long discussion and deliberation, our security team gently caught her and brought her to the Orphanage. It was really hard to believe that something so small could make so much noise. Anyone would have thought that she was being murdered the way she was carrying on. We took her and put her into a dark holding cage to calm her down, since then we have been bottle feeding her. We guessed she was two to three weeks old when the guys brought her in, and although initially she was very skittish, she has become bold and full of bounce since then. She has already bitten through two teats and actually prefers the large variety of leaves we bring in to her every day. She is really georgous and we already have a mate for her, commom grey duiker male Bhebhe, who was an orphan four years ago here at Chipangali.
