The Founders
The late Vivian J. Wilson, the visionary founder of Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage, together with his late wife Paddy, left an indelible mark on wildlife conservation when he established the sanctuary in 1973. His life’s work, driven by a profound commitment, dedication, and love for wildlife, has left a legacy that continues to inspire and guide the conservation efforts at Chipangali. Viv’s pioneering spirit and deep compassion for animals have ensured that his mission of protecting and rehabilitating wildlife thrives, resonating through the ongoing work of the orphanage. His contributions to wildlife preservation in Zimbabwe and beyond remain a testament to a life well lived in service to the natural world.
KEVIN & NICKY WILSON
Directors
Today, Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage thrives under the dedicated leadership of Vivian Wilson’s son, Kevin, and his wife, Nicky, who represents the second generation of the Wilson family’s commitment to wildlife conservation. As hands-on directors, they bring a blend of passion, expertise, and innovation to the organisation. Kevin leverages his photography background and extensive experience in wildlife care, rehabilitation, and release. His qualifications in first aid and the safe immobilisation of wildlife, combined with his affinity for technology, enable him to oversee daily operations and lead the orphanage’s rehabilitation initiatives and public relations. Nicky, also with a photography background and a proud mother of two children raised at the orphanage, plays a key role in enhancing Chipangali’s visitor experience and educational programs. She heads visitor education and oversees the kids’ education programs. Nicky’s commitment also shines through her efforts to arrange donations for local schools, emphasising the importance of education and community in conservation. Leading the Business Centre, she manages the finances and cares for young animals. Together, Kevin and Nicky continue the Wilson legacy, securing Chipangali’s position as a beacon of hope and restoration for Zimbabwe’s wildlife.
MICKAYLA WILSON
Animal Care Professional & Head Volunteer Coordinator
Mickayla Wilson, the daughter of Kevin and Nicky, is a vibrant part of the Wilson family’s third generation of dedication to wildlife conservation at Chipangali. Growing up amidst the sanctuary’s diverse inhabitants, Mickayla has inherited a profound connection with wildlife, making her a natural and passionate professional in the field of wildlife care and conservation. Her deep-rooted knowledge and hands-on experience, nurtured from a young age within the sanctuary’s bounds, position her as an indispensable full-time member of the Chipangali team. Mickayla also plays a pivotal role as the head coordinator of the sanctuary’s international volunteering program, which welcomes up to 20 international volunteers and students at a time throughout the year, further extending Chipangali’s impact on global conservation efforts and education.
RYAN WILSON
Animal Care Professional & General Manager
Ryan Wilson stands as a pivotal figure at Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage, embodying the passion and expertise that have become synonymous with the Wilson family name. As Kevin and Nicky Wilson’s son, Ryan has grown from his youth into his role not only as an adept animal care professional but also as the general manager responsible for the sanctuary’s daily operations and maintenance of its facilities. Beyond these on-site responsibilities, he spearheads the orphanage’s videography projects. His specialty in drone footage not only captures Chipangali’s rehabilitation and release successes but also showcases the natural beauty of Zimbabwe’s wildlife around the country, raising awareness of crucial conservation issues through his visual storytelling. He oversees the orphanage’s social media strategy, using his integrated approach in videography to highlight the sanctuary’s achievements and mission to a global audience.
CAROL MACKLIN
Business Center Secretary
Born in Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), Carol Macklin has carved a meaningful path with Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage, marking a significant chapter in her diverse professional journey. After obtaining her education in Zimbabwe and accruing a rich background spanning roles from a telephonist to legal secretary and administration manager, Carol became a part of the Chipangali family in 2004. Starting as a secretary for Dr. Vivian John Wilson, she seamlessly transitioned to supporting his son, Mr. K.V. Wilson, after Dr. Wilson’s passing. Carol’s profound impact at Chipangali is underscored by her dedication to the orphanage’s mission, bringing her extensive administrative expertise to the forefront of wildlife conservation. Her work ensures smooth operations and contributes significantly to the sustainability of the orphanage’s efforts. Carol’s journey with Chipangali is a testament to her adaptability, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of Zimbabwe’s wildlife, embodying the spirit of dedication of the Chipangali team.
CAROLINE FLETCHER
Caroline Fletcher, based in the UK, brings a wealth of expertise to her role at Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage, drawing on her extensive background as a senior project manager in the office fit-out sector. At Chipangali, Caroline is instrumental in enhancing the orphanage’s visibility and support networks within the UK. Her responsibilities include managing campaigns to raise awareness, coordinating projects, and assisting with fundraising efforts aimed at securing essential resources for the orphanage. Her close relationship with the Wilson family and her proactive engagement in promoting fundraising efforts underscore her dedication to the wildlife conservation causes she holds dear. Caroline’s professional acumen and her passionate advocacy play a crucial role in furthering Chipangali’s mission, making her a valued member of the team and a vital link between the UK and Chipangali’s on-ground operations in Zimbabwe.
ASHTON TSHUMA
Educational Officer EPIC Kids Program
Ashton Tshuma has been a dedicated member of the Chipangali team for the past 17 years. He began his journey as a driver, where his reliability and commitment quickly stood out. Over time, his passion for wildlife and conservation education led him to take on the role of Educational Officer for the EPIC Kids Program. In this position, Ashton has inspired countless young people, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for protecting wildlife and the environment.
Zoë
GoEco Team Representative
Originally from Canada, Zoë has been a part of the GoEco team since 2013, when she started as a volunteer abroad. Now, she is a representative for GoEco, Chipangali’s trusted partner in volunteer initiatives for more than 15 years. Zoë’s journey at Chipangali began first as a volunteer, which provided her with adventurous experiences that she passionately shares with future volunteers. GoEco is the point of contact for internationals eager to support Chipangali’s mission, ensuring a smooth and personalised preparation for the volunteer program in Zimbabwe. Together with the entire GoEco team, Zoë takes great joy in facilitating meaningful wildlife conservation journeys at Chipangali, striving to make every volunteer’s story one of impact and inspiration, just as it was for her.
